Community Knowledge-Base:
An Exploration of Our Collective Wisdom

Our communities are blessed with ordinary people in all walks of life who have deep understanding of the issues which confront us daily, and in this series, CitizenNewscaster.com seeks out that deep community-based knowledge. The Community Knowledge-Base series challenges the notion that people need to turn away from community for interpretation and information of important events.  In recent decades, sources of news have become increasingly centralized with the flow of information emanating from distant and monopolistic programming sources. The CitizenNewscaster.com News and Information Reformation is part of a large citizens’ movement which acts as a counterbalance to one size-fits-all centralized media. Community Knowledge-Base is a regular series on CitizenNewscaster.com. Please visit us often as we continually update and document our Citizens’ Knowledge-Base.

2-20-2009 Helen Rucker, who has lived in Seaside for 33 years, describes herself as a retired school librarian from a segregated community in Louisiana. She may be too modest. Ms. Rucker has served on the Seaside City Council and on numerous boards and commissions. Currently she is a member of the Board of Education, and she is actively engaged in the fight against HIV/AIDs. With a wisdom gained of experience, she speaks of the loss of social cohesion as a byproduct of racial integration. She offers commentary on the the plight of students and teachers, and she sheds light on the inherent tensions existing between religion and contemporary social issues. CitizenNewscaster.com salutes Ms. Rucker, community activist, civic leader, retired librarian and Citizen-Scholar.

12-20-2008 Otis Stevensen, owner of Otis's Auto Sales, is a longtime Central California resident and businessness owner. Otis has experienced segregation, and he has seen the Detroit auto manufacturing industry from the inside. In this interview, Otis shares insights derived from those experiences, and shares his view of the place of business in society. His insights are timely in light of the election of the nation's first black president, the current Detroit auto-making slump, and the deepening financial crisis. Many thanks to Otis for being the first citizen scholar to be documented in the Citizens' Knowledge-Base.
