the Federal bike commuting tax benefit of $240 a year, you can actually earn money by commuting on a bicycle. It’s easy to see how bicycling makes good economic sense.
Bicycling is also among one of the cleanest modes of transportation, as it helps to reduce the number of motor vehicle trips and the amount of emissions. Making more trips on our bicycles can effectively help to improve air quality.
- There are many ways to participate in Bike Week:
On Tuesday, May 12, ride with elected officials and city staff to the Salinas and Greenfield city council meetings.
- On Wednesday, May 12 at 6:00 p.m., take a free five-mile Community Ride through the City of Salinas starting at the parking lot adjacent to the Maya Cinemas and the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas. This bike ride will promote the message of motorists and cyclists sharing the road safely, respectfully, and courteously.
- On Thursday, May 14, put some fun into the old commute and ride your bike to work or to school. Free breakfasts and nutritional snacks will be provided to students and teachers who bike to participating schools. Bicyclists will also receive free breakfasts and other incentive items at the following locations:
- 12th Street on the Monterey Bay Coastal trail in Marina,
- The Haute Enchilada Café at Moss Landing,
- Joselyn’s Bikes and Light and Motion in Monterey,
- Embassy Suites in Seaside, and
- Salinas City Hall.
- On Saturday, May 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, attend a free class that will prepare bicyclists to be comfortable riding on the street, taught by a League of American Bicyclist Instructor at the Salinas YMCA. Participants will have a chance to win a bicycle at the end of the workshop. All ages are welcome.
- On Saturdays May 9 and May 16, join the local cycling clubs on two bike rides. Bicyclists will have an opportunity to ride and connect with other bicycle enthusiast
All events are free and participants of Bike Week events will be entered into a drawing to win a laptop computer and other prizes.
