Environmental Activism and the Internet Panalists

The Monterey Institute of International Studies recently hosted a conference in which workshops and discussions were held on Green Initiatives. CitizenNewscaster.com attended several of the panels and presentations and observed an abundance of enthusiasm, as is often the case when nimble minds join on intellectual topics, and an abundance of expertise, as can be exampled in the panel discussion on the topic of the internet and environmental activism. (See the video above). The panel consisted of enthused and eminently qualified activists. Introductions were provided by the President of the Monterey Institute, Sunder Ramaswamy from whom the following bios were paraphrased:

Bill Mckibben is renowned as an environmentalist and writer. During his early years, he was the President of the Harvard Crimson Newspaper, and during the early 1980’s he wrote for the New Yorker magazine. By 1989, McKibben had published a book on global climate change “The End of Nature” which is widely regarded as the first book for a general audience on climate change. He is an activist on the subject of climate change and he is the founder of the website 350.org which is dedicated to raising awareness of global warming. McKibben is a contributor to New York Times, the Atlantic Monthly, Harpers, The Rolling Stone and other magazines. In addition, he is a scholar in residence at Middlebury College

Eric Schlosser has been a correspondent for the Atlantic Monthly since 1996. He is a Princeton graduate with a degree in American history. He wrote the best selling book “Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal” which was on the best sellers list of the New York times for more than 2 years and which was also made into a movie. Schlosser has won the national magazine award, and he has appeared on 60 minutes, CNN, CBS, NBC Nightly News, and Fox News, and he has been interviewed on NPR and covered in various magazines

Rebecca Solnit has written twelve books including 2007’s Storming the Gates of Paradise: Landscapes for Politics, A Field Guide to Getting Lost, Hope in the Dark: Untold Histories - Wild Possibilities, Wanderlust: The History of Walking, and As Eve Said to the Serpent: On Landscape, Gender, and Art. She has won the Guggenheim Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Lannan Literary Award. Solnit is a contributing editor to Harpers, columnist for Orion, and she writes for tomdispatch.com. She has been an active campaigner on campaigns including anti-nuclear, anti-war, environmental, indigenous land rights and human rights issues.

Jason Scorse is the Chair of the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) Environmental Policy Program. He holds an M.A. from UCSC and UC Berkeley and a Doctorate in Economics from UC Berkeley. He has published articles ranging from eco-tourism as a peace-building strategy to the economics of sustainable development, and he has completed a book manuscript titled “What Environmentalists Need to Know About Economics. Scorse has consulted for the National Ocean Economics Program, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Sierra Club and the city of Santa Cruz. He has also won the MIIS award for excellence in teaching
